Thomas Dandelet, Ph.D. Berkeley, is Professor in the Department of History. Professor Dandelet specializes in Renaissance and Baroque Italy and more particularly in Italy’s contacts with the Spanish Empire. He is the author Spanish Rome, 1500-1700 (Yale UP), 2001 [Spanish translation La Roma Espanola (Critica) 2002] and The Renaissance of Empire in Early Modern Europe (Cambridge UP), 2014. He has contributed to several anthologies on the history of Early Modern Italy with essays on the economic, political and religious history of the Spanish in Rome. Recent articles include: “Imperial Anxiety, the Roman Mirror, and the Neapolitan Academy of the Duke of Medinaceli,” in Representing Rivalry in the Early Modern Mediterranean (University of Toronto Press) 2015, and “Imagining Marcus Aurelius in the Renaissance: Forgery, Fiction and History in the Creation of the Imperial Ideal,” in For the Sake of Learning, Essays in Honor of Anthony Grafton (Brill), 2016.
